NYT from June 10, 1986. I know that filming for Sweet Diane finished in 1986...this maybe from the last day?
The abandoned craftshop...missing Mickey Mouse.
Room 109, you can check in but you can never...
get clean sheets.
A typical room in the Heiden Hotel. A few second after this was snapped an enormous turkey vulture landed on top of the right window sash and scared the wits out of us.
Scrawls along a window frame.
Secrets behind the curtains?
Floor collapsing under the weight of an old iron stove, Heiden Hotel kitchen.
Going through the lobby of the former Heiden Hotel we came across a postcard showing the prosperous and fun times of summers past. Judging from the styles and the phone number on the back (190-191) it was from the late 60's.
It's funny the emotions that a photograph can bring to the surface in different people. When I first stumbled upon these bikes it was definitely the emotions of fear and dread. I did allow myself to fancy that possibly these did belong to kids who had gone off on an adventure, but the image screamed tragedy and so I posted it under the "Little Bobby was never seen again" title.
It could just as easily been "Little Bobby off on an adventure..." but to me that wouldn't work.
In reality these bikes are probably all stolen from neighboring houses, and dumped along the tracks when the tires go flat.
Anyway, you never know what you will find out shooting.
Welcome to the Desolate Places blog. Every week I will post a few of my photos from Flickr with some additional commentary.
Also, in a few days DesolatePlaces.com will be back in operation!
